OPZIEN glossy (CGK Zwijndrecht 100 jaar)

In opdracht van de CGK Zwijndrecht is er een glossy gemaakt en verspreid (1500 exemplaren) ter gelegenheid van het 100 jarig bestaan van de kerkelijk gemeente.
Ik heb zorg gedragen voor de redactieformule, de vormgeving, het regelen van het drukwerk, een deel van de fotografie en ben nauw betrokken geweest bij de redactie. Door gebruik van goede foto’s, een vooraf uitgewerkt bladspiegelformat, mooi papier voor het binnen werk en omslag en het gebruik van spot-uv, heeft de glossy een mooie en professionele uitstraling gekregen. Naast de glossy heb ik een bijpassende envelop, berkenhouten houders en een A6 uitnodiging en poster ontworpen voor het feest ter gelegenheid van het jubileum. Tot slot is er ook een landingspage gemaakt die specifiek gericht is op de glossy en het 100-jarig bestaan van de gemeente. stichting Dutch Baroque – huisstijlontwerp

Van 2014 tot en met 2017 ben ik verantwoordelijk geweest voor de vormgeving van alle promotionele materialen en drukwerk van stichting Dutch Baroque. In 2014 ben ik vanaf het eerste begin nauw betrokken geweest bij de start van de stichting. Hierbij kon een goed uitgewerkt huisstijlontwerp natuurlijk niet ontbreken.

De huisstijl is zo vormgegeven dat deze herkenbaar is voor de liefhebbers van oude muziek. Dit zonder dat deze hierbij muf of oubollig aan doet om zo ook een nieuwe – jongere – doelgroep aan te spreken.

De volgende design uitdagingen zijn onderdeel geweest van het proces naar de definitieve huisstijl (project is uitgevoerd in Engels):
Design a corporate identity for a starting foundation that feels solid enough for international recognition and that fits a baroque music foundation, jet feeling fresh and modern?

  • Make people recognize a baroque music foundation using the corporate identity.
  • Design a fresh modern corporate identity fitting a new generation.
  • Recognizably connect this new music foundation to existing historically informed performers?
  • Connect Gerard de Wit inseparably with this new music foundation?

Industrial Design Master graduation project

The goal of my Master graduation project was to find a way to re-humanize our living room that is increasingly – and unavoidably – filled with smart technology using smart furniture that allows for quality time with family members.

The final product is a smart table that tries to get a user to put their phone down on it. After that, it shows photo and video content created and shared that day with that phone, effectively enriching and supporting quality time with family members around it.

I graduated cum-laude.

In opdracht van Vincent Kortleve (docent/trainer fysiotherapie en psychologie) heb ik de vormgeving van zijn boek ‘FYSIOTHERAPEUTISCHE GESPREKSVOERING’ op mij genomen. Naast de algehele opmaak van het boek heb ik ook diverse infographics, schema’s en een deel van de redactieformule ontworpen.

Citymaps MAACKT

Having MAACKT up and running for a couple of months I started looking into the possibility of making citymaps cut out of wood. After some research I learned that no-one was doing this thus far whilst printed citymaps were gaining popularity. Some further research and prototyping helped to make the digital drawings in a way that was commercially viable. April 2016 the first citymap (of Dordrecht) was presented on social media. This was received very well.

Once more citymaps where introduced and promoted on social media it became clear that this was something to pursue. MAACKT received way more orders and attention than I could handle. The only possible solution would be to either stop MAACKT or to invest and buy my own machinery. This is where MAACKT changed from a study sidetrack to a serious business. Getting financed, meant having a proper business plan. Another challenge I had to overcome was researching and finding the right machinery and doing necessary modifications for power supply and fume extraction.

Today MAACKT offers several hundreds of citymaps that are each available in at least 6 different variations. Citymaps cover up to 90% of MAACKT sales online.

I designed a number of of interlocked lasercut lamps for MAACKT. These are constructed via a clamp connection I developed myself. These connections are flexible whilst assembling and rigid when finished due to their specific shape. The goal is to use no glue for interconnecting parts which is economically better but moreover reduces environmental impact and assembling time.

All lamps are losely based on silhouettes of well known industrial lamps.

During this semester I decided to focus on prototyping quality and aesthetics. In this project, I created a chair called Tracey.

” The beauty of chairs is that they are – possibly visually attractive – everyday objects that become an integral part of our homes and even our lives. A chair may move through many spaces in the house over the years, forming a trace of past usage. “

The chair I created shows traces of its users over time by illuminating the surface seat. These traces are derived from pressure and color of the user on the seat surface.

The aesthetics of usage traces is enhanced and – literally – highlighted by the illumination of the users behavior on the chair. The use of warm materials – felt and wood – and high-tech, provides a pleasant contrast. The illumination and the power cord at the back of the chair evoke curiosity for this otherwise regular chair. The elegant shape of the chair gives it a sense of warmth and personality. Download project report.

The Unaware Objects module is about things that behave (slowly) the way they do, without you being able to interact with it.

This lamp is initially designed as part of Unaware Objects research.  Therefore the initial prototype is designed to be perceived as a normal lamp on a fixed place in a living environment. Over time however it will change the light distribution in the room, opening up for a change in how the room is perceived and used. Due to changed light conditions, some objects suddenly appear more inviting to use, while other objects will be left in the dark. “It slowly drifts it’s gaze to explore uncharted territory creating ensembles with other objects in the room”. Download report.

The prototyping for Unaware Objects really showed the power of research through design. After fiddling around on a computer, with some drawings I moved away from this and started making things at the workshop. This changed the creative flow dramatically, enabling me to push away from earlier ideas. This is a valuable insight since my ideation process up to this point usually took place behind a computer screen. It is amazing to see how stepping away from the ordinary – aware objects – helps to get creative juice flowing. Furthermore I was very surprised to see what qualities such seemingly silly objects offered.

Shape changing music alteration interface (research project)

This Shape changing music alteration interface is designed to facilitate a research project that was carried out as a first project during my Industrial Design Master. This research was part of the GHOST research project. GHOST stands for Generic and Highly Organic, Shape-changing inTerfaces.

I have conducted an experiment in which, a shape changing interface was compared to a more traditional Graphical interface and Tangible interface. I have chosen interacting with music specifically because I believe that we have lost the rich experience from the old days in current music devices and applications, leading to less engagement with music interaction. Therefore the engagement with music interaction using a Shape Changing Interface (SCI), a Tangible User Interface Graphical User Interface (TUI) and a GUI is compared, using the RC&E framework by Marco Roozendaal. I learned that however Tangible User Interfaces (TUI) might offer the rich experience that brings back the engagement with the music interaction, it lacks the usability of the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) due to its more static character. Shape Changing Interfaces (SCI) might be able to offer the dynamics of a GUI while it also retains the richness of a TUI. However, due to technical issues the research has been somewhat limited, the SCI scored significantly higher on engagement than the TUI and GUI. Download project report and research.

My personal vision on music interaction design. Interact with the sound character and play music by mood. Desing is losely inspired by pipe organs; the king of all instruments, with beautiful tactile interaction.

Only a digital prototype has been made. This is mainly done using Solid Works.

Creative Technology Bachelor graduation project Catherijne Convent

This project is carried out for Museum Catharijne Convent as my bachelor graduation project.

Museum Catharijne Convent has the mission to protect and reveal Dutch Christian heritage. For primary school children the museum offers the Feest!Weetwatjeviert exhibition. The Feest!Weetwatjeviert exhibition features several interactive installations that learns primary school children about Christian holidays and celebrations.

A new interactive installation had to be designed for this exhibition. This installation has to teach children – between the age of 8 to 12 – some things about the ten commandments that Moses received and wrote on two stone tablets. Above this installation an artwork with Moses will be placed.

Therefore an interactive game concept had to be developed that is both challenging, entertaining and educative for the children and keeps them occupied for five minutes.
The aspects of entertainment, challenge and education are enhanced by applying learn trough play – educative entertainment – theory. Tangible interaction is used to enhance the game experience. Using short iterations of rapid prototyping many game concepts are explored, proposed to the client and elaborated.

The game concept that is fully elaborated for this project in collaboration with the client, is about helping Moses to carry the heavy stone tablets up the mount Sinai and ultimately about averting evil by using the Commandments on the stone tablets. This game concept- which is now called Commandment Utopia – has been developed into a mock-up, an Wizard of Oz prototype, a functioning prototype, and a final installation design mock-up. The installation is thus not yet developed on a level that is suitable for placement in the Feest!Weetwatjeviert exhibition but the final installation design mock-up shows how the installation would look like of it is.

This graduation project has been rewarded a grade 9.

Game concept elaboration

Helping Moses to carry the heavy stone tablets at the mount Sinai is represented by sliding a ‘heavy’ screen over a slope. Sliding the screen thus requires some physical effort. The slope depicts ten panels with the Ten Commandments written on it. The slider screen reveals additional information when hovering over these commandments. This information is needed to answer ten corresponding questions. Answering questions is necessary because meanwhile earth is being attacked from ten ‘anti-commandments’ – evil in our world. An enclosure around the installation shows ten animations that depict the consequences of this evil in the world. The attack on earth is initiated from under these animations. To avert this attack and thus banish evil from earth, – creating Utopia – the Ten Commandments are used. The Ten Commandments are represented by ten discs that can be dragged to the outlines of the earth in order to prevent the attacking objects from reaching earth. In order to do this, the commandment discs must be unlocked first by answering the questions. Each question unlocks one of the commandment discs. When the world is fully surrounded by the Ten Commandment discs, evil can’t reach earth anymore and Utopia is created. The children have to do this within five minutes. This is pointed out by a countdown timer to induce excitement and challenge.

Playtest and result

The playtest with the Wizard of Oz prototype indicated that – even in a premature state – this installation complies with the aims of this project as established in the research questions and the requirements. However the test was very small and therefore somewhat inconclusive, it turned out, the children liked the game experience very much. They seemed immersed and excited. Probably enhanced by the countdown timer. Therefore can be concluded that this installation concept answers the research questions. Further elaboration into a functioning prototype and final installation design mock-ups proved to be satisfactory for the client. The extent to which the installation is capable of conveying information about the Ten Commandments could not be tested yet. The other test results along with the theory behind educative entertainment are an indication that this aim will be complied with as well. Based on the premature state of the game concept prototypes, some recommendations for future work to actually realize the installation are done. This includes a work sequence format, interface design proposals, extensive constructions drawings, a discussion of all components of the installation and a cost analysis.

Hands-on Conference
I have been asked to stay involved and assist on further elaboration of the project to get it finished. I did a short lecture on this project and gamification at the 2015 Hands-on Conference of the International Association of Childrens Museums in in Amsterdam.

Smart Thermostat

For the course Human Factors of my Creative Technology bachelor I designed, developed and tested a digital working prototype of a smart thermostat. Back in 2012 smart thermostats where not commonly available. Thermostats where either overly complicated or overly simple and lacking functionality.  Therefore the design challenge was to come up with a programmable thermostat interface improvement. The design is aimed at simplicity, usability and being intuitive. The working prototype is created using Processing programming and Adobe Photoshop for the look and feel. The design is tested with nine users that used different types of thermostats at the time. In general they where very pleased with the thermostat design and functionality. They especially appreciated the clarity of the house overview and easy programmability.

This design leans on per room temperature management and monitoring. This is controlled via a roomplan on a touchscreen by swiping temperature up or down. The user is able to switch between energy usage mode and temperature mode. The interface also features an energy alarm when a certain threshold of energy usage is passed. (For instance having the heaters on whilst a window is still open) The interface also has basic programming functionality. Basic to keep the interface simple and usable, which I believe is more powerful than offering countless possibilities. The programming functionality consists of a day/night setting and date to date temperature selection.

For the Smart Environment Course of my Creative Technology Bachelor I designed and developed a prototype that allowed for smart shopping with shop routing, homestock management and after pay functionality. The prototype is realized using Arduino, RFID and Processing. The design needs to be incorporated within the shopping cart, in the shop packagings and at the customers stock. Inter-Sprint DTP en grafisch ontwerp

Gedurende mijn eerste studie; Business Information Technology, bleef er genoeg tijd over om vrijwel fulltime te werken. Op basis van mijn toenmalig portfolio wed ik aangenomen bij Inter-Sprint om mij te richten op het ontwerpen van het promotionele materiaal. Inter-Sprint is de grootste banden en wielen distributeur van Europa. Dat gaf mij de gelegenheid een grote variëteit aan promotionele producten te ontwerpen voor internationale en nationale gelieerde partners en klanten, de merken van Inter-Sprint en Inter-Sprint zelf.  Mijn werkzaamheden bestonden onder andere uit het ontwerpen en bewaken van huisstijlen, het ontwerpen van logo’s, krantenadvertenties, flyers, brochures, websites, productontwerp, videoanimaties, belettering en het maken en uitwerken van marketing plannen.

In 2006 werden deze werkzaamheden uitgevoerd in samenwerking met één collega. Door de jaren heen (tot en met 2011) is het werk en de afdeling gegroeid en geprofessionaliseerd. Mijn afstudeerproject voor HBO Business Information Technology in 2009 was ook gericht op het professionaliseren van de reclameafdeling van Inter-Sprint. Dit project is afgerond met een 8.

OPZIEN glossy (CGK Zwijndrecht 100 jaar)

In opdracht van de CGK Zwijndrecht is er een glossy gemaakt en verspreid (1500 exemplaren) ter gelegenheid van het 100 jarig bestaan van de kerkelijk gemeente.
Ik heb zorg gedragen voor de redactieformule, de vormgeving, het regelen van het drukwerk, een deel van de fotografie en ben nauw betrokken geweest bij de redactie. Door gebruik van goede foto’s, een vooraf uitgewerkt bladspiegelformat, mooi papier voor het binnen werk en omslag en het gebruik van spot-uv, heeft de glossy een mooie en professionele uitstraling gekregen. Naast de glossy heb ik een bijpassende envelop, berkenhouten houders en een A6 uitnodiging en poster ontworpen voor het feest ter gelegenheid van het jubileum. Tot slot is er ook een landingspage gemaakt die specifiek gericht is op de glossy en het 100-jarig bestaan van de gemeente. stichting Dutch Baroque – huisstijlontwerp

Van 2014 tot en met 2017 ben ik verantwoordelijk geweest voor de vormgeving van alle promotionele materialen en drukwerk van stichting Dutch Baroque. In 2014 ben ik vanaf het eerste begin nauw betrokken geweest bij de start van de stichting. Hierbij kon een goed uitgewerkt huisstijlontwerp natuurlijk niet ontbreken.

De huisstijl is zo vormgegeven dat deze herkenbaar is voor de liefhebbers van oude muziek. Dit zonder dat deze hierbij muf of oubollig aan doet om zo ook een nieuwe – jongere – doelgroep aan te spreken.

De volgende design uitdagingen zijn onderdeel geweest van het proces naar de definitieve huisstijl (project is uitgevoerd in Engels):
Design a corporate identity for a starting foundation that feels solid enough for international recognition and that fits a baroque music foundation, jet feeling fresh and modern?

  • Make people recognize a baroque music foundation using the corporate identity.
  • Design a fresh modern corporate identity fitting a new generation.
  • Recognizably connect this new music foundation to existing historically informed performers?
  • Connect Gerard de Wit inseparably with this new music foundation?

Wie is de mol spel

Najaar 2017 heb ik in samenwerking met een van de leiders een ‘Wie is de mol’ spel uitgewerkt voor een weekend van een tienerclub.

Hierbij is een gevarieerd programma uitgewerkt met buitenactiviteiten in bos, strand, duinen, en in de stad en binnenactiveiten. Daarnaast is er afgewisseld in fysieke en mentale opdrachten. Dit alles met een zo logisch mogelijk verloop, verschillende testen (10 vragen over het doen en laten van de mol) een introductie en een spannende onthulling en huldiging.

Industrial Design Master graduation project

The goal of my Master graduation project was to find a way to re-humanize our living room that is increasingly – and unavoidably – filled with smart technology using smart furniture that allows for quality time with family members.

The final product is a smart table that tries to get a user to put their phone down on it. After that, it shows photo and video content created and shared that day with that phone, effectively enriching and supporting quality time with family members around it.

I graduated cum-laude.

Dutch Baroque records cd serie

In navolging van de huisstijl van stichting Dutch Baroque werd mij ook gevraagd de huisstijl voor Dutch Baroque Records te ontwerpen en uit te werken in een aantal cd uitgaves. Dutch Baroque Records staat los van stichting Dutch Baroque en is het label van cd uitgaves door Gerard de Wit.

De cd hoesjes zijn zo vormgegeven dat opeenvolgende cd’s duidelijk tot hetzelfde label behoren als deze naast elkaar staan.

Interactive Secret Service – Wie is het

Being one of the people in charge of, and responsible for a teenager club I had the delight of having to come up with a game to be played during a long weekend camp.
Considering their love for their smartphones I’d thought to use this for the good. Therefore I developed a Guess Who game for which they had to acquire information using their smartphone and hints that where given throughout the camp. All was dipped into a secret agency sauce to make things more interesting. The game combined this mostly digital information gaining with the tactile qualities of the physical game ‘Wie is het?’.
The game itself was a success, however Internet connection sometimes posed a problem.
Some of the younger teenagers had trouble with the fact that all was written in English. (mainly to be able to touch the right ‘secret agency’ atmosphere)

Citymaps MAACKT

Having MAACKT up and running for a couple of months I started looking into the possibility of making citymaps cut out of wood. After some research I learned that no-one was doing this thus far whilst printed citymaps were gaining popularity. Some further research and prototyping helped to make the digital drawings in a way that was commercially viable. April 2016 the first citymap (of Dordrecht) was presented on social media. This was received very well.

Once more citymaps where introduced and promoted on social media it became clear that this was something to pursue. MAACKT received way more orders and attention than I could handle. The only possible solution would be to either stop MAACKT or to invest and buy my own machinery. This is where MAACKT changed from a study sidetrack to a serious business. Getting financed, meant having a proper business plan. Another challenge I had to overcome was researching and finding the right machinery and doing necessary modifications for power supply and fume extraction.

Today MAACKT offers several hundreds of citymaps that are each available in at least 6 different variations. Citymaps cover up to 90% of MAACKT sales online.

Lampen MAACKT

I designed a number of of interlocked lasercut lamps for MAACKT. These are constructed via a clamp connection I developed myself. These connections are flexible whilst assembling and rigid when finished due to their specific shape. The goal is to use no glue for interconnecting parts which is economically better but moreover reduces environmental impact and assembling time.

All lamps are losely based on silhouettes of well known industrial lamps.

During this semester I decided to focus on prototyping quality and aesthetics. In this project, I created a chair called Tracey.

” The beauty of chairs is that they are – possibly visually attractive – everyday objects that become an integral part of our homes and even our lives. A chair may move through many spaces in the house over the years, forming a trace of past usage. “

The chair I created shows traces of its users over time by illuminating the surface seat. These traces are derived from pressure and color of the user on the seat surface.

The aesthetics of usage traces is enhanced and – literally – highlighted by the illumination of the users behavior on the chair. The use of warm materials – felt and wood – and high-tech, provides a pleasant contrast. The illumination and the power cord at the back of the chair evoke curiosity for this otherwise regular chair. The elegant shape of the chair gives it a sense of warmth and personality. Download project report.

Speelkeuken (Ikea hack)

During holiday I adapted an Ikea play kitchen for my 2 year old son. He liked playing with the kitchen anyway but liked the real kitchen with all sounds, lights and beeping buttons much more. Therefore I decided to make the Ikea kitchen more smart and interactive. The interesting thing about this project that it had to function for a long time and be sturdy enough to withstand childs play. This challenged me to think and work differently with electronics and finishing.

Therefore I hacked the original stove and added switch-potmeters to be able to control the brightness of red stove illumination. Furthermore I made one of the cabinets into an oven with a switch-potmeter controllable light and fan in the back. The partypiece, to my son, however is a yellow led lit seven segment display, to which I assigned four pushbuttons to program it. All accompanied with the ‘beloved’ beeping sounds of course. To finish things up I painted the kitchen and gave it a tile background and a pickles-pot-lamp with a lamp switch.

Innovative printer/scanner design inspired by Raymond Loewy

A printer design using freshly acquired hans-on prototyping techniques. The design is based on the design principles famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy – being one of my favorite designers. This meant a streamlined design had to be created – giving smooth speed and direction – featuring big bold roundings, line (chrome) detailing and feminine shaping. An inventive printer concept was developed – rotating instead of a linear moving printerhead – that allowed for a Raymond Loewy-esque design. The final prototype fidelity was at sufficient level to allow people to get an idea of the look and feel of the final product.

Designing this printer was part of a module assignment during my Master Industrial Design. The goal of this module was to learn to quickly iterate through ideation and sketching to 3D mockups and prototypes and provided me some new prototyping techniques that became very apparent in my next projects. With my new developed knowledge and skills I expect that in the future I will have a greater design and prototype quality. Also my future designs will be much more informed by design history. The Unaware Objects module is about things that behave (slowly) the way they do, without you being able to interact with it.

This lamp is initially designed as part of Unaware Objects research.  Therefore the initial prototype is designed to be perceived as a normal lamp on a fixed place in a living environment. Over time however it will change the light distribution in the room, opening up for a change in how the room is perceived and used. Due to changed light conditions, some objects suddenly appear more inviting to use, while other objects will be left in the dark. “It slowly drifts it’s gaze to explore uncharted territory creating ensembles with other objects in the room”. Download report.

The prototyping for Unaware Objects really showed the power of research through design. After fiddling around on a computer, with some drawings I moved away from this and started making things at the workshop. This changed the creative flow dramatically, enabling me to push away from earlier ideas. This is a valuable insight since my ideation process up to this point usually took place behind a computer screen. It is amazing to see how stepping away from the ordinary – aware objects – helps to get creative juice flowing. Furthermore I was very surprised to see what qualities such seemingly silly objects offered.

Shape changing music alteration interface (research project)

This Shape changing music alteration interface is designed to facilitate a research project that was carried out as a first project during my Industrial Design Master. This research was part of the GHOST research project. GHOST stands for Generic and Highly Organic, Shape-changing inTerfaces.

I have conducted an experiment in which, a shape changing interface was compared to a more traditional Graphical interface and Tangible interface. I have chosen interacting with music specifically because I believe that we have lost the rich experience from the old days in current music devices and applications, leading to less engagement with music interaction. Therefore the engagement with music interaction using a Shape Changing Interface (SCI), a Tangible User Interface Graphical User Interface (TUI) and a GUI is compared, using the RC&E framework by Marco Roozendaal. I learned that however Tangible User Interfaces (TUI) might offer the rich experience that brings back the engagement with the music interaction, it lacks the usability of the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) due to its more static character. Shape Changing Interfaces (SCI) might be able to offer the dynamics of a GUI while it also retains the richness of a TUI. However, due to technical issues the research has been somewhat limited, the SCI scored significantly higher on engagement than the TUI and GUI. Download project report and research.

MAACKT is a brand and webshop for lasercut home decoration design products. I started MAACKT during the first semester of my Industrial Design Master.

Having acquired a lot of affinity and knowledge on digital production throughout my education, I decided to exploit this. I decided to make some laser-cutted products first. Laser-cutting being a mature technology allows for high quality consumer ready products, whilst retaining the flexibility of digital production. Next to this I really like the natural look of laser-cut products and the fact that it clearly shows how it is made and constructed. I started with some home decoration products and small furniture like lamps, vases and bowls. At first MAACKT was a nice side activity that got me acquainted with the great variety of aspects in running a small business. I got some orders now and then, that I made at RDM Makerspace in Rotterdam. The products where also sold at local Concept Stores and I did a number of nice custom made projects for ‘de Groene Passage’ in Rotterdam.

I developed the MAACKT website, designed the logo and the visual identity but moreover made my first entrepreneurial steps.

Creative Technology Bachelor graduation project Catherijne Convent

This project is carried out for Museum Catharijne Convent as my bachelor graduation project.

Museum Catharijne Convent has the mission to protect and reveal Dutch Christian heritage. For primary school children the museum offers the Feest!Weetwatjeviert exhibition. The Feest!Weetwatjeviert exhibition features several interactive installations that learns primary school children about Christian holidays and celebrations.

A new interactive installation had to be designed for this exhibition. This installation has to teach children – between the age of 8 to 12 – some things about the ten commandments that Moses received and wrote on two stone tablets. Above this installation an artwork with Moses will be placed.

Therefore an interactive game concept had to be developed that is both challenging, entertaining and educative for the children and keeps them occupied for five minutes.
The aspects of entertainment, challenge and education are enhanced by applying learn trough play – educative entertainment – theory. Tangible interaction is used to enhance the game experience. Using short iterations of rapid prototyping many game concepts are explored, proposed to the client and elaborated.

The game concept that is fully elaborated for this project in collaboration with the client, is about helping Moses to carry the heavy stone tablets up the mount Sinai and ultimately about averting evil by using the Commandments on the stone tablets. This game concept- which is now called Commandment Utopia – has been developed into a mock-up, an Wizard of Oz prototype, a functioning prototype, and a final installation design mock-up. The installation is thus not yet developed on a level that is suitable for placement in the Feest!Weetwatjeviert exhibition but the final installation design mock-up shows how the installation would look like of it is.

This graduation project has been rewarded a grade 9.

Game concept elaboration

Helping Moses to carry the heavy stone tablets at the mount Sinai is represented by sliding a ‘heavy’ screen over a slope. Sliding the screen thus requires some physical effort. The slope depicts ten panels with the Ten Commandments written on it. The slider screen reveals additional information when hovering over these commandments. This information is needed to answer ten corresponding questions. Answering questions is necessary because meanwhile earth is being attacked from ten ‘anti-commandments’ – evil in our world. An enclosure around the installation shows ten animations that depict the consequences of this evil in the world. The attack on earth is initiated from under these animations. To avert this attack and thus banish evil from earth, – creating Utopia – the Ten Commandments are used. The Ten Commandments are represented by ten discs that can be dragged to the outlines of the earth in order to prevent the attacking objects from reaching earth. In order to do this, the commandment discs must be unlocked first by answering the questions. Each question unlocks one of the commandment discs. When the world is fully surrounded by the Ten Commandment discs, evil can’t reach earth anymore and Utopia is created. The children have to do this within five minutes. This is pointed out by a countdown timer to induce excitement and challenge.

Playtest and result

The playtest with the Wizard of Oz prototype indicated that – even in a premature state – this installation complies with the aims of this project as established in the research questions and the requirements. However the test was very small and therefore somewhat inconclusive, it turned out, the children liked the game experience very much. They seemed immersed and excited. Probably enhanced by the countdown timer. Therefore can be concluded that this installation concept answers the research questions. Further elaboration into a functioning prototype and final installation design mock-ups proved to be satisfactory for the client. The extent to which the installation is capable of conveying information about the Ten Commandments could not be tested yet. The other test results along with the theory behind educative entertainment are an indication that this aim will be complied with as well. Based on the premature state of the game concept prototypes, some recommendations for future work to actually realize the installation are done. This includes a work sequence format, interface design proposals, extensive constructions drawings, a discussion of all components of the installation and a cost analysis.

Hands-on Conference
I have been asked to stay involved and assist on further elaboration of the project to get it finished. I did a short lecture on this project and gamification at the 2015 Hands-on Conference of the International Association of Childrens Museums in in Amsterdam.

Walking aid project – eenzijdige loopstoornis hulpmiddel

This walking aid design is made in collaboration with a project group for a project within my Industrial Design Minor at Twente University.

For this project we had to come with some tool to make things easier when going on holiday for people with some mental or physical dissability. Therefore we decided to develop a walking aid for people with long distance unilateral walking gaits.
The final prototype led to very good results for our testing participants. We won the jury award for the best product.

Responsibilities: I was responsible for writing about and investigating the problem, producing the acnle part, making mockups and design the PR materials.

Train interior design

In response to an assignment for my Industrial Design Minor I designed a train interior using Solid Works. Two different compartments have been designed into a single train wagon, fulfilling three functions. One of the compartments serves a catering/bar function. Travellers can sit at the bar or on one of the bar stools at the table. Both the bar and the table are perfectly suited for standing around and having informal conversation due to their height. The other compartment serves two purposes. For one it features two working/reading tables. These are tables for six persons. They have some power outlets and a stand for magazines and booklets that also serves as a visual barrier between the two sides of the table. Allowing people to work or read facing each other without it being awkward. Next to these tables their are four ‘train-wagons’ within this compartment. These train wagons form a semi-closed area where four people can sit in a sense of privacy with each other at a table and have a good time together without disturbing other travellers too much. As an assignment for the ‘New Media’ track within my Creative Technology bachelor, me and some fellow students created a voice over, music and foley-effects over a movie of my classic Alfa Romeo. We chose to play with atmosphere through audio and image by switching vintage and energetic vibe. This assignment was part of the sounddesign course that I finished with a grade 10.

Levend Tower defense

Dit levend ‘Tower Defense’ spel is ontwikkeld als een leuke manier om competitief veel van een bepaald item te verzamelen of een herhaaldelijke actie te ondernemen om zo een spelvoordeel te verkrijgen. Dit maakt het uitermate geschikt om bijvoorbeeld in bedrijven een grote repetitieve taak leuk te maken en snel en met veel mensen te doen. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan het digitaliseren van een archief.

Voor dit spel wordt een groep mensen in twee teams verdeeld die met elkaar strijden. Er is een grote centrale ruimte nodig waar de twee teams elkaar treffen en per team een loket waar ze hun werk kunnen inleveren en zo spelvoordelen kunnen verkrijgen.

Dit spel is getest met 40 mensen op een strand. De taak was hierbij zoveel mogelijk zand verzamelen in emmers. Er werd hard gewerkt en fanatiek gespeeld; het spel was een succes.

MEME evolution
MEME evolution – Tune in

For the 2012 GOGBOT festival an installation has been created that is called MEME evolution – Tune in. Memes where the GOGBOT theme that year. MEMES are a collective and cultural memory and recognition. In western world the word meme is made famous by the annotated 9gag images.

The broader meaning of a meme as defined on the MEME page of Wikipedia is that “A meme is an idea, behaviour or style that spreads from person to person
within a culture”. This transmission from one mind to another can be done through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. So not only trough the World Wide Web. The word meme is derived from “something imitated” in Greek language. Common examples of memes are melodies, catch-phrases, fashion and architecture. Memes evolve due to a process of variation, mutation, competition and inheritance, each of which influence a meme’s reproductive success.

After some researching and brainstorming, me and my project group came to the conclusion that, next to the Internet memes, that are most obvious nowadays, music is one of the best illustrations of a meme. Melodies occur or are created and if they are catchy or beautiful people remember them and even make variations on it or imitate them. This process can stretch itself for centuries. For instance, the brilliant and famous composer J.S. Bach derived lots of the chorals that are in his cantatas from melodies ‘of the street’, well known in that time. This provided landmarks in the sometimes rather complicated music. These corals have been performed trough the centuries and nowadays still are. Also variations are made within very different music styles.

This is what this project installation demonstrated: the spreading and evolving of a melody. It is a cut out illustration of this phenomenon.
The spreading part is forced by asking people to mimic a melody we will provide them or that is provided by the person before them.
The evolving part may happen due to different reasons like a bad musical hearing, a bad memory, distraction or noise but also by seeming recognition and habituation to the melody structures from a certain culture or music style.
This evolution of the melody will be shown by actually letting people hear them after each other and by mapping the differences or similarities visually. Why people hear the sequence of melody mimics they will also see the person that mimics it. This might give viewers an idea what kind of person this is and why he or she influences the melody in his or her way. Showing the evolution these ways entails the message that people nearly always slightly affect memes they spread unaware or maybe aware. All participants have their influence, no matter if some one else finds it for the good or bad.

The processing and visualization of the input and evolving music is done using Processing programming and Resolume VJ software.

Smart Thermostat

For the course Human Factors of my Creative Technology bachelor I designed, developed and tested a digital working prototype of a smart thermostat. Back in 2012 smart thermostats where not commonly available. Thermostats where either overly complicated or overly simple and lacking functionality.  Therefore the design challenge was to come up with a programmable thermostat interface improvement. The design is aimed at simplicity, usability and being intuitive. The working prototype is created using Processing programming and Adobe Photoshop for the look and feel. The design is tested with nine users that used different types of thermostats at the time. In general they where very pleased with the thermostat design and functionality. They especially appreciated the clarity of the house overview and easy programmability.

This design leans on per room temperature management and monitoring. This is controlled via a roomplan on a touchscreen by swiping temperature up or down. The user is able to switch between energy usage mode and temperature mode. The interface also features an energy alarm when a certain threshold of energy usage is passed. (For instance having the heaters on whilst a window is still open) The interface also has basic programming functionality. Basic to keep the interface simple and usable, which I believe is more powerful than offering countless possibilities. The programming functionality consists of a day/night setting and date to date temperature selection.

For the Smart Environment Course of my Creative Technology Bachelor I designed and developed a prototype that allowed for smart shopping with shop routing, homestock management and after pay functionality. Gedurende mijn eerste studie; Business Information Technology, bleef er genoeg tijd over om vrijwel fulltime te werken. Op basis van mijn toenmalig portfolio wed ik aangenomen bij Inter-Sprint om mij te richten op het ontwerpen van het promotionele materiaal. Inter-Sprint is de grootste banden en wielen distributeur van Europa. Dat gaf mij de gelegenheid een grote variëteit aan promotionele producten te ontwerpen voor internationale en nationale gelieerde partners en klanten, de merken van Inter-Sprint en Inter-Sprint zelf.  Mijn werkzaamheden bestonden onder andere uit het ontwerpen en bewaken van huisstijlen, het ontwerpen van logo’s, krantenadvertenties, flyers, brochures, websites, productontwerp, videoanimaties, belettering en het maken en uitwerken van marketing plannen.

In 2006 werden deze werkzaamheden uitgevoerd in samenwerking met één collega. Door de jaren heen (tot en met 2011) is het werk en de afdeling gegroeid en geprofessionaliseerd. Mijn afstudeerproject voor HBO Business Information Technology in 2009 was ook gericht op het professionaliseren van de reclameafdeling van Inter-Sprint. Dit project is afgerond met een 8.

Vision and Identity

Ik als ontwerper en mijn persoonlijke visie op design.

I consider myself to be a self-directed and multidisciplinary designer, with a specific love for visual aesthetics. A product I develop is not finished unless it looks beautiful to me ánd the potential users. Raymond Loewy back in the 60s already said “Between two products equal in price, function and quality, the one with the most attractive exterior will win.”

We live in a time of great promise and perspective to near future possibilities.I think this promise should be embraced and expressed in designs to convey perspective and beauty to the world around us. I believe this beauty and perspective can be expressed by aesthetics and design for pleasure: Visual attractiveness as a key characteristic for all products we use on a regular base and proposing pleasure  through for instance gamification. Beautiful design should be part of each and everyones life.

Time and perspective

My love for visual aesthetics lead me to the designs of the great designers of yesteryear. Products that are magically both child of their time and timeless at the same time. I’m getting more and more passionate about design history and design classics. I strive to position myself in, and am inspired by, these historic benchmarks. I therefore always aim to clearly position my design in a historical, societal and cultural context or trends. This does not mean my designs are just nostalgic. I means that I strive for the same quality, optimal usage of current technology and design values. We are in an era of great technological advancements. From the invention of the car, to the fridge, television, computer, internet and smartwatches; there is no denial that we seem to be in a technologically gaining momentum. With that comes great promise and perspective to near future possibilities. As a designer I decreasingly need to design for (integrated) technology and increasingly for human qualities. (No need for cables, technology gets smaller resulting in more freedom of form etc.) We are at the point where paradigms of ubiquitous and pervasive computing become reality and the physical and digital realm are more and more fused together. As a contemporary designer I am confident at integrating technology and electronics into my products. Now that integrated technology becomes more and more ubiquitous, I believe this enables me to enrich user experiences by keeping in mind that the user experience, the perceived value and quality is the goal and not the technical novelty.

High quality physical prototyping and digital production

I strongly believe in high quality physical prototyping. During the past years I have developed myself into making high quality physical prototypes that posses the same visual and tactile qualities as the envisioned end product.

During my education I became very interested in digital production techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting and cnc milling. Being very graphic and software oriented – following earlier education and experiences – this paved the way to high-res physical prototyping. Current digital production techniques allow for a close connection between design and creating the product. This could rule out steps between designer and consumer. This is valuable in both sustainability and enhancing holistic design possibilities.

Ideation

I’m a designer that loves the ideation phase of a project. I easily come up with project concepts. Over the years I got very experienced in refining ideas by using a variety of creativity techniques and by changing perspectives. I usually can’t wait to visualize these ideas and concepts to be able to convey my idea to others by using physical and interactive materiality, whilst remaining my critical attitude towards its aesthetic quality.

Na langere tijd te hebben gewerkt met diverse rapid prototyping technieken, besloot ik de potentie van deze technieken om te zetten in iets concreets. Daaartoe heb ik een webshop opgezet om zelfontworpen lasergesneden design artikelen aan te bieden. De productie houd ik bewust lokaal en op kleine schaal. Hierbij maak ik zoveel mogelijk gebruik van duurzame materialen. Naast de webwinkel worden producten van MAACKT incidenteel ook aangeboden op bijvoorbeeld de Swan Market.

Website realisatie ontwerp en beheer van de CGK Zwijndrecht.

Gewerkt op - en gebouwd aan - de reclame afdeling van Inter-Sprint banden B.V. , de grootste bandendistributeur van Europa. Mijn functie op deze afdeling bestond uit grafisch ontwerp, dtp, marketing en website ontwerp/bouw voor Inter-Sprint en (internationale) gelieerde partners en klanten. Hier heb ik tevens zowel het stage- als het afstudeerproject van mijn opleiding Bedrijfskundige Informatica gedaan. Voor mijn stageproject heb ik een advies gedaan betreffende het in kaart brengen en stroomlijnen van de administratieve organisatie. Dit project heb ik afgerond met een 8. Voor mijn afstudeerproject heb ik een plan geschreven, analyse en adviezen gedaan, met betrekking tot het opstarten van een professionele reclame afdeling. Dit project heb ik afgerond met een 8.

Werklid van de commissie computer hulverlening van de CGK in Zwijndrecht. Mijn taak was het leveren van eerste hulp bij pc hard- en software problemen.

Ongeveer tweemaandelijks op zondagochtend live radio opnamen maken.

Recentelijk: Huis vormgever voor Stichting Dutch Baroque. De vormgeving van het boek fysiotherapeutische gespreksvoering door Vincent Kortleve.

Stage voor mijn HAVO opleiding. Reparatie en verkoop van pc’s en randapparatuur.
